Ask A Ref - Goalie Interference
Question: What is the call when a defending player interferes with an attacking player which causes interference with the goalie? While the goalie was being interfered with, another player on the attacking team shot the puck in the net. Does the goal stand?
This is always a tough one to call. From one angle, you don’t want to punish the attacking team for something out of their control. However, should the goal be allowed if the goalie wasn’t given the opportunity to make a save?
As per rule 66 in the CARHA Hockey Rule Book, “If a player of the attacking team has been physically interfered with by the actions of any defending player so as to cause him to be in the goal crease, and the puck should enter the net while the player so interfered with is still in the goal crease, the goal shall be allowed.” The rule continues to read “A minor penalty shall be assessed to an attacking player, who while his team is in possession of the puck, is interfered with by a defending player, but fails to attempt to avoid making contact with the goalkeeper. In addition, if a goal is scored it shall be disallowed.”
Okay, so what does this all mean? Let’s go through the call.
What is the call when a defending player interferes with an attacking player which causes interference with the goalie?
Right away, the referee should signal a delayed penalty for interference on the defending team.
While the goalie was being interfered with, another player on the attacking team shot the puck in the net. Does the goal stand?
The goal will stand as long as the attacking player attempts to avoid contact with the goalkeeper. This may be tough to call, so the referee will have to use his/her judgement. If the attacking player does not try to avoid the goalkeeper, the goal should be washed out and the attacking player will also receive a minor penalty.
